Off-Track Doors and Cable Repair

When a door comes off its track, or a lift cable snaps or unwinds from its drum, the door is no longer supported the way it was designed to be. It may be resting on one roller and a bent piece of steel. Running the opener at that point is what turns a repair into a replacement, and it is genuinely dangerous.

How Doors Come Off Track

• Backing a vehicle into the door — by far the most common cause
• A broken spring letting the door drop hard and jump the rollers
• Worn or seized rollers that stop rolling and start dragging
• A cable that unwound from its drum because the door was closed onto an obstruction
• Loose track brackets that let the vertical track drift out of alignment over years

Cables Come in Pairs and Fail in Pairs

The two lift cables share the load equally. When one snaps, the door drops on that side, twists in the opening and usually leaves the track. The surviving cable has been through the same number of cycles and the same corrosion, so replacing only the broken one is a short-term answer. In coastal Florida especially, cable corrosion at the bottom bracket is a routine finding and it is worth looking at even when nothing has failed yet.

What We Check Beyond the Obvious

Re-seating a door is the easy part. The question that matters is why it left the track, and what else got damaged on the way. We check the drums for grooving, the shaft for straightness, the rollers and their stems, the hinges at each panel joint, the bottom brackets, the track for kinks, and the panels themselves for creasing. A door put back on bent track will come off again.

Bottom Brackets Are Under Tension

The bottom bracket on each side holds the lift cable and is under the full spring load whenever the door is down. Removing one without first releasing spring tension is one of the most dangerous things a person can do to a garage door, and it is a common cause of serious injury among people attempting a cable repair themselves. This is a job for someone with the right tools and the habit of doing it in the right order.

Repair or Replace the Section

A creased panel weakens the whole door and often cannot be straightened to any useful standard. Individual sections can frequently be replaced if the model is still available, which is far cheaper than a new door. On older or discontinued doors the section may not exist any more, and at that point we tell you honestly that replacement is the sensible route rather than fitting a mismatched panel.

In the Meantime

Do not run the opener. If the door is partly open and you can safely do so, keep vehicles and people out from under it. If it is closed, leave it closed. We schedule an appointment window and bring the parts that a track and cable job normally needs, so the visit usually settles it in one trip.
