A surprising share of "my opener is broken" calls are not opener problems at all. A door that is out of balance, a broken spring, a bent track or a cable off its drum will all make the opener strain, click, reverse or stop. Replacing the motor in that situation buys you a new unit that fails in the same way. We diagnose the door first.
Chain drives are the least expensive and the loudest — fine over a garage nobody sleeps above. Belt drives are noticeably quieter and are the right choice when there is a bedroom over the garage. Screw drives sit in between and want periodic lubrication. Wall-mounted jackshaft openers mount beside the door instead of on the ceiling, free up overhead space, and suit high-lift or cathedral-ceiling garages. In Florida and Texas both, a storm that takes the power out also takes out your garage door if the opener has no battery backup. Manual release exists for exactly that reason, but it is awkward from outside and it means the door cannot be secured normally afterwards. Battery backup is now standard on many models and it is worth having in a hurricane state.
Phone control and camera integration are genuinely useful for deliveries and for checking whether you left the door open. They also add a network dependency to a mechanical device. If the appeal is remote checking, it is worth having. If the appeal is novelty, a good quiet belt drive with a keypad will make you happier for less money.
